Crossing the Darien Gap

09/27/08 14:58

People who have made it their quest to cross the Pan American Highway are probably familiar with the Darien Gap, that stretch of land that divides Central and South America. This was called a gap precisely because the Pan American Highway stops abruptly in Panama and Colombia. It is said that crossing the Gap by land is near impossible.

But it is still possible. How? Pyrodes tells us how.

In July 2007 me and my partner, writer Fernando Cardenas, crossed The darien gap. We started in the town of Acandi in Colombia, we went west through the Acandi river all the way up to the Turquesa river in Panama, from then on we walked east to the town of Bajo Chiquito in Panama. It took us four days and a half. Our guides or coyotes abandoned us a day before we reached Bajo chiquito. we were lost for a day until rescued by Embera indigenous. Then we were arrested by Panamanian border police. We were thrown in jail for three days until deportation...you can check my ongoing story blog on: http://villalonsantamaria.wordpress.com/
