Perhaps the main reason why Panama is enjoying the prosperity it has right now is the Panama canal, which took hundreds of years in the making.

With thousands of lives lost and hundreds of million of dollars invested, this is the single most expensive investment that the Americans and French has ever done at that time.

Panama honors 1964 Canal Riots victims

Despite its being famous as an American expat hub, a certain hostility against Americans remain in the hearts and minds of many Panamanians. This is perhaps magnified when the day comes when Panama honors its dead civilians who died in the 1964 Canal Riots, where American soldiers were said to kill them. Of course, opinion in the other side is different. It's just sad that an otherwise healthy relationship can be tainted by something like this.
